Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs, a swimming club in Hastings, is excited to promote a local swimming event at the breathtaking Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs. Now, we all know Tasmania is synonymous with stunning landscapes and natural wonders, but did you know it's also a great destination for snow sports?
While Tasmania may not be widely known for its snow sports, it boasts two ski fields that operate during the winter months. Mount Mawson, located at Mount Field National Park in the south, and Ben Lomond in the north, offer fantastic opportunities for skiing, snowboarding, and snow play.
Mount Mawson, run by a dedicated team of volunteers, may have basic facilities, but its location offers a panoramic view of the southwest and its surroundings. Just a short 1 ½-hour drive from Hobart, Mount Mawson is the perfect choice for those looking to enjoy downhill and cross-country skiing and embrace the winter wonderland.
For those situated closer to Launceston, Ben Lomond is the place to be. Located just an hour's drive outside of Launceston, Ben Lomond National Park hosts an alpine village at the foot of the ski slopes. Here, you can find everything you need for a fun-filled day on the slopes, including food, accommodation, ski lifts, lessons, and equipment hire. Bring the whole family along to enjoy skiing, snowboarding, and tobogganing at Ben Lomond.
Both ski fields generally open from mid-June until the end of September, but always keep an eye on the weather conditions as they can affect the season dates. It's important to note that visiting Ben Lomond requires traversing Jacob's Ladder, a steep, and narrow section of road. Make sure to carry snow chains between June and September and rent them from Ben Lomond BASE, conveniently located at the bottom of the mountain. Anti-freeze is also recommended for your vehicle. Safety is paramount, so please remember that walking up Jacob's Ladder (the road) is not permitted.
To make your visit more convenient, Ben Lomond Snow Sports operates a transport service during the ski season. They offer transportation from Ben Lomond's lower car park, ensuring a hassle-free experience. For updates on their services, don't hesitate to contact them at 0487 140 248.
While enjoying these spectacular ski fields, it is significant to take precautions and be prepared for changing weather conditions. Alpine areas are known for their unpredictable weather, so ensure you have the appropriate gear. A waterproof jacket with a hood, waterproof over trousers, sturdy walking boots, and warm clothing are essential. Pay special attention to the safety of children, older individuals, and those with certain health conditions or disabilities in these conditions.
