Welcome to the Seniors’ Section of Okehampton Golf Club! If you're a male or female member of OGC and aged 55 or over, you're eligible to join this Section for a small annual fee of £10. By joining, you'll have the opportunity to participate in exciting Monday competitions and friendly matches against other clubs.
For the male members, there's an additional perk – automatic membership to the Devon Men Veteran Golfers Association (DMVGA). This membership allows you to compete in the prestigious Emerton Court interclub knock-out competition, provided you're selected.
Every Monday, including Bank Holidays, the first tee is reserved exclusively for the Seniors’ Section from 08.26 to 10.26. Our Captain organises a variety of competitions each week, ranging from informal drawn team games to individual qualifying Medals and Stablefords. The schedule for these competitions is readily available to all paid-up members.
Booking tee times for designated competitions can be easily done through the BRS system. As for Drawn Games, members who wish to participate can notify the Captain by the previous Friday, ensuring their inclusion in the draw.
We also have a range of friendly matches lined up, with a total of 24 scheduled for 2024. Each match typically consists of 6 pairs per club, playing in a handicap match-play format. Our Captain appoints team managers for each pair of matches, who are responsible for team selection and all necessary arrangements.
When it comes to outfit and etiquette, we encourage our players to sport our club colours, which include navy trousers, a white polo shirt, and navy sweaters. We kindly request that post-match meals be enjoyed in smart casual attire. Speaking of meals, the cost for match meals ranges from £14 to £17, depending on the club.
The Emerton Court is an interclub knock-out competition that's open to all clubs affiliated with the DMVGA. This exciting competition adopts a home and away match play format, featuring teams of five pairs. Before each match, it's customary for our team to do a practice round on the opponent's course, showcasing our dedication and commitment. And of course, we proudly wear our club colours throughout.
Throughout the golf season, there are various individual club competitions and outside events that members can partake in. These include the Memorial Cup, a club knockout competition of individual match play that takes place throughout the season. We also have other prestigious Club Trophies up for grabs, such as the Pat Terry Cup, the Frank Dann Trophies, the Doug Cooper Trophy, the Courtney Heard Cup, and the Veterans’ Cup Order of Merit.
To add more excitement to our calendar, we hold three Senior Opens each year in Spring, Summer, and Autumn. We highly encourage our members to invite guests and potential new members to these events, showcasing the camaraderie and thrill of being part of our Sports Club. The dates for the 2024 Open are 22nd April, 8th July, and 16th September.
As tradition goes, our Seniors’ Captain organises an unforgettable Away Day each year as an end-of-season celebration. This day is filled with comradeship, great food, and fun prizes at a wonderful west-country course, creating unforgettable memories for everyone involved.
Lastly, we wrap up the year with the Seniors' Section held in November (Monday, 4th November 2024). During this event, the Captain passes on the role to the newly elected successor. The year concludes with the Seniors' Christmas Lunch, a delightful gathering taking place on Monday, 9th December 2024.
