Seido Karate Club in Nelson is excited to announce an upcoming local Karate event that is sure to ignite the passion of all martial arts enthusiasts!
Seido Karate is not your average martial art; it is an art form that focuses on the holistic development of individuals. Through physical, mental, and spiritual growth, participants are given the tools to enhance their everyday lives. What sets Seido Karate apart is its inclusive nature, welcoming men, women, and children of all ages. Whether you're rusty or a complete beginner, the progressive training program ensures that you can safely start your Karate journey at your own pace.
The benefits of Seido Karate go far beyond physical fitness. While group training and skill development contribute to an all-round state of well-being, the art also equips students with valuable self-defence techniques. By teaching individuals to utilise their entire body as a weapon, Seido Karate empowers its practitioners, enabling them to defend themselves confidently, even against larger assailants. This newfound confidence often spills into everyday life, granting students increased self-assurance and valuable conflict avoidance skills.
Seido Karate has garnered a commendable reputation over the past 35 years, thanks to its commitment to high-quality teaching standards and exceptional students. Founded in 1976 by Kaicho Tadashi Nakamura, a 9th Degree Black Belt, Seido Karate has gained recognition worldwide. Kaicho's own journey in Karate began at a young age, and after becoming the worldwide Chief Instructor for Kyokushinkai Kaikan Karate, he felt disillusioned with the competitive nature of the art. This led to the creation of Seido Karate, which emphasises values such as LOVE, OBEDIENCE, and RESPECT, aiming to bring Karate back to its original purpose – a martial art that can be practised safely by everyone.
The esteemed Kaicho Nakamura's beliefs and philosophy have inspired countless students across the globe. Today, both Kaicho and his son, Nidaime Kyoshi Akira, continue to teach and practice Karate daily at the World Headquarters in Manhattan, New York. It's remarkable to witness the legacy and impact Seido Karate has had on the martial arts community.
Taking a step back into history, we find that Karate has deep roots in both China and Okinawa, dating back thousands of years. The word 'Karate' itself is a combination of 'Kara,' meaning empty, and 'Te,' meaning hand, highlighting the art's focus on unarmed combat techniques. Seido Karate, on the other hand, originates from the Japanese words 'Sei' and 'Do,' translating to the sincere way. This particular style of Karate draws influence from Master Bodhidharma's meditation teachings in 5th Century China and the practical empty hand techniques developed by Okinawans when weapons were banned.
Over time, Karate has transformed from a form of self-defence into a pathway of self-discovery and realisation. In 1922, Gichin Funakoshi introduced Karate Do to Japan, catapulting its popularity. One of Funakoshi's students, Masutatsu Oyama, went on to establish his own Dojo and style called Kyokushin in 1953. Fast-forward to 1976, when Kaicho Nakamura, the head instructor of Kyokushin, decided to bring Kyokushin Karate to the United States, aiming to teach and promote this exceptional art form.
