Welcome to the Nelson Dojo, home of Seido Karate in the vibrant city of Nelson! Situated in the hall behind Old St John’s Church at 320 Hardy Street, this karate club offers a range of classes throughout the week, ensuring there's something to suit everyone's schedule.
Every Tuesday, the dojo hosts an adult beginner class, perfect for those who are new to the martial art or simply looking to brush up on their skills. On Wednesdays, the focus shifts to our Super Kids aged 5–8 years old, offering them a fun and energising environment to learn and grow. Older children have the opportunity to attend classes on both Tuesdays and Thursdays, allowing them to delve deeper into their training.
At the helm of the Nelson Dojo is Sei Shihan Aaron Barber, an esteemed karateka with an impressive background. Born in Christchurch and raised right here in Nelson, Aaron began his karate journey at the tender age of eight. In 1985, he made history by becoming the youngest person in New Zealand and Australia to achieve his first-degree black belt. With a family deeply ingrained in the karate world, it's no surprise that Aaron's passion for Seido Karate only flourished over the years.
Aaron's dedication to his craft took him across the globe to New York, where he trained extensively under the grandmaster of the World Seido Karate organisation. Today, he proudly holds the title of Sei Shihan, a sixth-degree black belt. Aaron is committed to bringing Seido Karate to as many individuals as possible, making it accessible while respecting the sport's rich traditions and high standards.
