Chris at Verulam Angling Club runs a top-notch fishing spot at the River Great Ouse – Felmersham Fishery, right near Bedford. Nestled just north of Bedford, this club controls about a mile of the river at Felmersham, making it their biggest Ouse fishery.
In 2022, they hit a snag losing some fishing rights and access due to farm management changes. But Chris is on it, keeping a close eye and making sure the authorities hear about it. Right now, the club still holds rights to parts from Pinchmill Islands down to the Viaduct. Even though access through the caravan park is a no-go, they’re hunting for other ways in and will update members when there’s news. For now, you can get to the whole stretch from the viaduct end, with parking next to Coffle End Cottages. A short walk gets you to the river.
Felmersham Fishery is a favourite among anglers, but it's currently a bit under-fished, offering huge potential. Expect monster perch, some tipping the scales at four pounds, and roach almost reaching two pounds. Plus, there are good catches of chub and bream.
Founded by local businessmen in 1934, Verulam AC serves over 2000 members today. From rivers to lakes and dedicated fly-fishing waters, they’ve got a diverse range of spots. The fisheries are well managed by dedicated folks, and members chip in with maintenance tasks once a year, like litter pick-ups or groundworks, based on what they can handle.
The club’s match section is buzzing, with a packed calendar of competitive events at various venues. They host charity matches, a championship series, and a popular summer evening league, keeping the excitement high.
Chris and the team place a strong emphasis on juniors, offering discounted subscriptions and waiving entrance fees to get more kids involved in fishing. Non-fishing guests are welcome at most spots too, and plenty have toilet facilities.
Committed to providing top-quality sport and a vibrant community, Verulam Angling Club is a leading name in Bedford, with something for anglers of all ages and abilities.
