Ringwood Martial Arts Academy, located in Ferndown, is a martial arts school that offers a range of traditional Chinese martial arts classes. Led by senior instructor Matt Young, the academy aims to promote healthy living through the practise of martial arts.
At Ringwood Martial Arts Academy, students can learn various styles of Kung Fu that have been selected from the founder's 40 years of training. These styles include Wing Chun, known for its effective close range fighting techniques and famous one-inch punch; Praying Mantis, a ferocious self-defence system known for its blinding speed and incredible strength; Choy Li Fut, a combination of devastating kicks and punching techniques; and Chang Chuan, a powerful and free-spirited system.
One of the main highlights at Ringwood Martial Arts Academy is their Chinese Kickboxing classes. Chinese Kickboxing is an exciting form of aerobic and anaerobic cardio workout and is one of the fastest-growing forms of exercise in the UK. Wutan Chinese Kickboxing combines the best techniques of self-defence with explosive punching, kicking, and wrestling skills from traditional Kung Fu. Students can improve their strength, self-confidence, fitness, and overall well-being through hitting pads and practising these dynamic skills.
For those looking for a more focused and meditative practise, the academy offers Tai Chi classes. Tai Chi is a traditional Chinese exercise suitable for adults of all ages, promoting improved fitness and health. It is also a profound martial art, a way of cultivating the intrinsic energy of the body (qi) and a form of meditation. Students start their training with the Yang style, the most suitable form for beginners.
Ringwood Martial Arts Academy also believes in the benefits of martial arts training for juniors. They offer junior classes on Saturdays from 9:30 am to 10:30 am, providing juniors with an opportunity to experience the many benefits of martial arts training.
The history of Ringwood Martial Arts Academy is rooted in the lineage of GrandMaster Liu Yun Qiao, the former head trainer to the bodyguards of President Chiang Kai Shek. In 1966, GrandMaster Liu retired from his post and chose twelve disciples to pass down his skills, naming his school Wutan. Many of these disciples had already been highly skilled martial artists and brought their own students to Wutan, creating a school with a wealth of experience and knowledge in traditional martial arts.
Senior instructor Matt Young, who leads Ringwood Martial Arts Academy, has over six decades of Chinese martial arts knowledge. He developed skills that are rarely found in today's martial arts circles and has dedicated his life to teaching and spreading his knowledge.
