Ringwood Judo Club is a competitive yet community-focused club located in Ringwood, New Zealand. With sessions available for juniors and adults, beginners are always welcome. The club was founded in the 1960s by Keith Adams and has since been a place where many children have developed their judo skills and personal self-respect.
Judo, which means “gentle way” in Japanese, is a martial art that was created by Jigoro Kano in 1882. It originated from the ancient techniques used by the samurai and feudal warrior class. At Ringwood Judo Club, sessions are held every Monday and Wednesday to cater to all abilities from the age of 5 onwards.
For junior and teen judo sessions, children and youth classes are available starting from the age of 5. These sessions take place on Mondays at 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm, as well as on Wednesdays at 6:00 pm. The first judo lesson is free, and JudoGi (judo jackets) are available to borrow at the club.
Adult judo sessions are open to beginners of all ages and grades, as well as visitors from other judo clubs. These sessions are held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 8:00 pm. Additionally, the club holds monthly Open Mat Randori Sessions on the first Monday of every month at 8:00 pm. This is a great opportunity for judokas of all abilities, from beginners to competitive Randoris, to have some good fun.
Ringwood Judo Club operates out of the Greyfriars Community Centre in Ringwood, and newcomers to judo are always welcome to join. The first taster session is free, and spare Judo GIs (judo jackets) are provided at the club. Junior judo sessions are available on Mondays and Wednesdays, and adult/senior judo sessions take place on the same nights.
Membership fees for the club are 4 per session, with a discounted rate of 7 for two siblings or family members. The club also offers gradings for children aged under 8 and those aged 8 to 15. The dedicated team of coaches at Ringwood Judo Club ensures that sessions are engaging and effective for all participants.
