Phoenix Aikido & Fitness Club, established in 1970, is a renowned martial arts school and sports club located in Coventry, England. Founded by Tom and Barbara Moss, the club has been serving the community for over five decades. Although Tom sadly passed away in 2003, Barbara Moss, the current principal coach of Yama Arashi UK, continues to lead the club with her expertise as a 6th Dan.
As a member of the British Aikido Board and affiliated with Yama Arashi in Brussels, Belgium, Phoenix Aikido provides exceptional training in the Japanese martial art of Aikido. Developed by Morihei Ueshiba at the turn of the twentieth century, Aikido emphasises a completely defensive approach to combat, promoting non-violence as its core principle. By moving in harmony with the attacker, practitioners of Aikido can subdue aggression without causing injury, making it a martial art suitable for individuals of all ages and physical abilities.
The club boasts a spacious dojo with three separate rooms, allowing for a comprehensive timetable of classes. To view the class schedule, visitors can refer to the Aikido timetable or the fitness timetable on the club's website. The welcoming atmosphere at Phoenix Aikido extends to everyone, regardless of their training background or ranking.
Tom Moss, a respected figure in the Aikido community, played a pivotal role in establishing Phoenix Aikido. Born in Bathgate, Scotland in 1944, Tom developed a passion for martial arts at a young age. After learning Karate and Judo, he discovered Aikido in 1965 and was immediately captivated by its effectiveness and non-aggressive techniques. Over the years, Tom dedicated himself to Aikido, travelling around the UK to learn from esteemed teachers and reaching the rank of Shodan in 1969.
In 1973, Tom married Barbara, and together they founded the Phoenix Aikido Club. With a growing student body, the club underwent several renovations and expansions, resulting in the development of three training areas, comfortable changing rooms, and extensive facilities. In 1997, Tom achieved his lifelong dream of teaching Aikido full time, introducing new classes and providing one-to-one tuition and special women's sessions.
Today, Phoenix Aikido & Fitness Club stands as a testament to Tom Moss's dedication and love for Aikido. By offering high-quality training in Aikido, the club continues to empower individuals, promote physical fitness, and foster a strong sense of community. Visitors are always welcome to experience the unique atmosphere and join the vibrant martial arts community at Phoenix Aikido & Fitness Club.
