Perranporth Surf Life Saving Club is a renowned and historic surf lifesaving club located in Perranporth, New Zealand. Established on February 13th, 1957, the club was formed by 10 dedicated volunteers in response to a series of drownings that occurred at the beach in the early 1950s. Being one of the oldest surf lifesaving clubs in Great Britain, Perranporth SLSC holds a special place in the local community.
Originally, the club operated out of a small beach hut on the sand, which served as its first headquarters. However, over the years, the club has undergone significant developments and improvements. Thanks to part-funding from the National Lottery, Perranporth SLSC now boasts a recently completed extension. In 2003, an extension funded by the RNLI Beach Rescue programme was added, providing a larger professional lifeguard facility, spacious changing rooms, and a purpose-built lifeguard base station equipped with a medical room.
On the ground floor of the club's facilities, members have access to well-maintained male and female changing rooms, large equipment storage areas, a gym, sauna, and showers. The first floor provides a spacious and modern training room, providing an ideal learning environment for students and newcomers to beach rescue. These facilities are testament to the club's commitment in providing top-notch training and resources for its members.
Today, Perranporth SLSC boasts a membership of over 300 individuals of all ages. The club prides itself on being a diverse and inclusive community, with members from various backgrounds and walks of life. This amalgamation of personalities, patrolling members, and competitors creates a unique atmosphere and lifestyle that sets Perranporth SLSC apart.
The club's motto, “Vigilance and Service,” reflects its commitment to the local community and its dedication to helping others. Members of Perranporth SLSC understand the importance of beach safety and surf lifesaving and actively promote these principles both within the club and to the wider community. They also commit to providing water safety cover during club training events and offer voluntary beach and water safety cover to the public as part of organised club patrols.
In addition to their responsibilities, club members are encouraged to take qualifications in lifesaving and first aid. They act as ambassadors for the club, have a high public profile in the local community, and participate in fundraising activities. Perranporth SLSC values the contributions and efforts of its members and, in return, offers support from peers, assistance when needed, training for competition and surf lifesaving awards, and a strong sense of camaraderie and fun.
Whether you're an experienced surfer, a beginner, or simply passionate about water safety, Perranporth Surf Life Saving Club welcomes all individuals who share their values and commitment to vigilance and service. By joining this respected club, you become part of a tight-knit community of like-minded individuals who are dedicated to saving lives and promoting beach safety.
