Welcome to Penrith Pumas Wheelchair Rugby Club (WRC), Cumbria's only club dedicated to the exhilarating sport of wheelchair rugby! Nestled in the heart of Cumbria, Penrith Pumas WRC offers the local community a unique opportunity to participate in the only full contact Paralympic sport of wheelchair rugby. This sport is not limited to those already in wheelchairs; it welcomes individuals with physical impairments or hidden disabilities who wish to experience an all-inclusive, thrill-seeking, adrenaline rush full contact sport.
Penrith Pumas WRC believes that no matter a persons ability, there is a role for them within the sport. Beyond playing, individuals can also contribute by volunteering on the bench, officiating, or even refereeing. The club's aim is to remove the stigma associated with disabilities and highlight that not all disabilities are visible. Wheelchair rugby goes beyond enhancing physical health; it also significantly improves mental wellbeing.
By joining Penrith Pumas WRC, you become part of a supportive family while meeting amazing people who share similar stories and experiences.
The club warmly welcomes anyone over the age of 16 to train with them. Training sessions are held every Tuesday from 5:30 PM to 9 PM at Penrith Leisure Centre, Southend Road, Penrith, CA11 8JH, all year round.
Penrith Pumas also offers various ways for individuals to get involved and support the club. Those who are unable to actively participate in the sport but still want to contribute can assist in tasks such as setting up and clearing up after sessions, helping members get kitted up, and assisting the coach in setting up drills. The club also organises fundraising events and welcomes sponsorship for events, hosting of events, and challenges. Additionally, there are opportunities to serve as committee members, such as Treasurer, Volunteer Coordinator, Welfare Officer, or Secretary.
Promotion and marketing efforts are essential to the growth of the club, and individuals can assist by displaying posters, providing website support, managing social media accounts, and attending networking events. Those with mechanical skills can contribute by repairing tyres, changing inner tubes, and conducting general chair maintenance, ensuring the equipment stays in optimal condition. Lastly, each game requires four table officials and two on-court referees, making officiating and refereeing crucial roles within the club.
Penrith Pumas WRC adheres to a set of policies to ensure the fair and consistent treatment of all members. These policies cover areas such as anti-bullying, harassment, anti-doping, code of conduct for athletes and officials, core values, equality and diversity, health and safety, safeguarding, and data protection.
