Occasions. After moving to Australia, his passion for swordsmanship led him to study various martial arts styles, including Kendo, Iaido, and Kenjutsu.
With a desire to share his knowledge and love for Japanese swordsmanship, Peter established the PCh School of the Sword in Wynnum, Brisbane. The school is deeply rooted in traditional Japanese martial arts, specifically focusing on Shinkage Ryu Ichimon and Tenshin Ryu Hyoho.
The PCh School of the Sword is proud to be the first and currently the only school in Australia to offer training in Tenshin Ryu Hyoho. This style of swordsmanship originated from the Edo era and combines both Shinkage Ryu and techniques developed by Munenori Yagyu. It is a comprehensive martial arts training that includes arts such as Kenjutsu, Battojutsu, Sojutsu, Jumonjiyarijutsu, Naginatajutsu, Kusarigamajutsu, Tesajyutu, and Yawara.
Students at PCh School of the Sword can expect a holistic approach to their training. Beyond the physical aspects of swordsmanship, the school also places emphasis on personal development and self-improvement. Through meditation, philosophy, and physical training, students can enhance their mind, body, and spirit.
One of the core styles taught at PCh School of the Sword is Shinkage Ryu Shin Shin Muso Ryu Iaido. This style focuses on rapid combat encounters and trains students to be focused and aware. Students train with both sharp blades and Bokkuto, depending on their level of experience and the specific technique being practised.
The current Grandmaster, Toyoshima Kazutora, is the 25th Soke of the Shinkage Ryu Ichimon lineage, with origins dating back to the Warring States period. The school's Iaido training is under the patronage of Sano City Martial Arts and its chief instructor, Yamamoto Yoshio Sensei.
Led by Peter “Chewy” Chmielewski, an experienced practitioner with a lifelong passion for swords, the PCh School of the Sword offers a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students. Whether a beginner or an advanced practitioner, students have the opportunity to learn and grow in their swordsmanship journey.
