Planning a ride on the Old Coach Road Bike Trail in Ohakune? Stan, the seasoned organiser, has you covered.
Nestled in the stunning Tongariro National Park, this trail promises an epic cycling adventure for riders of all ages and skill levels. Starting from the beautiful sub-alpine native forest through to the historic 1880s cobbled road, the trail offers a unique blend of nature and history.
Riders will be treated to panoramic views of Mt Ruapehu and the surrounding plains, making each moment on the trail a visual treat. Keep an eye out for the historic railway viaducts, including the mighty Hpuawhenua, which towers at 45 metres.
Perfect for families or solo adventurers, the Old Coach Road stretches between Horopito and Ohakune. Riders can catch a shuttle to Horopito for a downhill cruise back to Ohakune, or, for a longer journey, cycle from Ohakune and back.
The track is well-marked but be sure to bring a map to time your ride and spot landmarks. A mix of smooth single tracks, challenging cobbled sections, and a few muddy spots means a mountain or hybrid bike is best. E-bikes are welcome too.
Weather can change quickly in the alpine environment, so check the forecast and dress accordingly. Stock up on food and water, as you won't find any facilities along the trail.
