Ju Jitsu is a Japanese martial art with ancient origins. The name can be translated to mean “gentle, soft, supple, flexible, pliable, or yielding. ” The art focuses on manipulating an opponent's force or strength, rather than directly opposing them. Historically, Ju Jitsu was developed as a method for defeating armed and armoured opponents, particularly when the practitioner possessed either no weapon or only a short weapon.
Techniques included hold downs, joint locks, and throws, as striking against armoured opponents proved ineffective.
Modern Ju Jitsu incorporates a wide range of techniques, including strikes, blocks, pressure points, locks, strangles, hold downs, knife (using wooden knives) defences, and throws. The art covers almost every aspect of combat and self-defence.
During a typical session at the Norwich Ju Jitsu Club, participants engage in warming up exercises and fitness training. The sessions are catered to each individual's fitness level, gradually progressing over time. Students then learn practical self-defence techniques through an approved syllabus of learning, participate in practise drills, and engage in a warm-down. The club also emphasises the importance of having fun while training and provides each student with goals to work towards.
Patience, training, and commitment are key to success in Ju Jitsu due to its diverse nature.
Training sessions take place every Tuesday evening from 7:30pm until 9:00pm. For senior grades, an additional 30-minute session is offered at the end of the class. The first session at the Norwich Ju Jitsu Club is always free, providing an opportunity for individuals to experience the art and the club firsthand. By joining the club, individuals can learn this wonderful martial art, boost their confidence, improve their fitness, and reduce their stress levels.
