The North London Sailing Association (NLSA) is a community group dedicated to providing affordable and accessible sailing opportunities to individuals in London. Their goal is to encourage more people to experience the joys of sailing, develop their skills, and foster a passion for the sport.
Membership with the NLSA offers a range of options for sailors of all levels. Members can enjoy a leisurely sail, participate in organised training sessions, or take part in racing events. Regardless of ability, everyone is encouraged to join in and have fun on the water. The NLSA is committed to helping members improve their skills and even offers assistance in progressing towards becoming a registered RYA Instructor.
The NLSA provides two locations for members to sail. The first is the West Reservoir in Stoke Newington, London. This hidden gem is tucked away in the picturesque London Borough of Hackney and offers 23 acres of water to explore. Sailing sessions are available year-round, with additional sessions held weekly during the summer.
On Sundays, sessions run from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, while on Tuesdays, sessions take place from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm (April to October).
The second sailing location is the Brightlingsea Centre in Essex. The NLSA is fortunate to own this residential coastal sailing base, situated on the Colne and Thames Estuaries. Brightlingsea has a rich maritime tradition and is an ideal location for RYA courses, race training, and day sailing or cruising. The accommodation is conveniently located just a short walk from the harbour where members can launch their Wayfarers.
NLSA membership offers numerous benefits, including the opportunity to participate in racing events at the West Reservoir, access to RYA training courses, coastal sailing experiences in Brightlingsea, and the chance to connect with other sailors at social events.
In recent news, the NLSA is celebrating its 50th anniversary on the West Reservoir. This milestone demonstrates the enduring legacy, progress, and adaptability of the club in providing easily accessible and enjoyable sailing experiences for Londoners. The NLSA is also proud to announce the acquisition of three new Laser Radial sails for use at the West Reservoir, providing a wider range of sailing options for members.
Additionally, the Hackney Council has published plans for a new green space, beginners' open water swimming area, café, and improved changing facilities at the West Reservoir. This development aims to enhance the area's biodiversity, landscaping, and recreational offerings.
