Northern Mixed Martial Arts

Northern Mixed Martial Arts (NMMA) is the first full-time MMA centre in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne, located in Epping. Founded in 2001 by Sensei Matt Tonkin, a 3rd Dan black belt, NMMA offers a variety of martial arts classes led by a team of experienced instructors.

The journey of NMMA began when Matt Tonkin first discovered martial arts at the age of 12. Starting with karate, he soon realised it wasn't the right fit for him. He then pursued tae kwon-do and achieved his junior black belt at the age of 17. However, due to changes within his club, he decided to seek a new path.

NMMA focuses on four types of martial arts: kickboxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Japanese Jiu Jitsu. Matt Tonkin and his team of instructors offer special lessons in various areas of martial arts, including Freestyle Ju-Jitsu, MMA, Kickboxing Muay Thai, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu No Gi Submission Wrestling.

In addition to martial arts training, NMMA also prepares individuals for specific goals such as Police Entry, Army Entry, and Special Sporting Events. Sensei Matt Tonkin, with over 20 years of experience in the industry and 10 years of teaching, emphasises the genuine and street-oriented techniques taught at NMMA.

NMMA provides a full-time training centre, offering the hardest training around. They welcome anyone who wants to experience their classes and training sessions. Their facility also hosts Bootcamps, Group Fitness classes, and Personal Training sessions. In the near future, NMMA plans to introduce women-only Self Defence and Fitness Classes to cater to the specific needs of female participants.

Under the leadership of Matt Tonkin, NMMA has gained recognition and credibility in the martial arts community. Matt holds credentials such as a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a black belt in Japanese Ju-Jitsu (3rd Dan), and a black arm band in Muay Thai Kickboxing.
