North Beach Surf Lifesaving Club, located on Marine Parade in North New Brighton, Christchurch, is a dedicated and passionate community organisation committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of beachgoers. Founded in 1916, the club has a long-standing history of saving lives and promoting water safety in the area.
The club's primary objective is to provide a safe environment on the beach by conducting voluntary lifeguard patrols. These patrols work tirelessly to prevent injuries and drowning incidents and are on duty on weekends from 11 am to 5 pm, as well as on Show Day and Waitangi Day. Additionally, SLSNZ regional lifeguard patrols are carried out on weekdays from 10 am to 6 pm during the peak season, guaranteeing that the beach is constantly monitored and protected.
North Beach SLSC offers a comprehensive Junior Surf programme, which aims to educate children about water safety while fostering confidence and creating opportunities for fun and friendship. Held on Sunday mornings throughout the summer, this programme provides a nurturing and supportive environment for children to learn and grow, guided by experienced and qualified coaches.
For young surf enthusiasts aged 13 to 14, the club provides a Rookie Lifeguard Programme. This programme serves as a stepping stone towards becoming a lifeguard and focuses on imparting essential skills and knowledge necessary for future lifesaving responsibilities. It offers valuable hands-on experience and prepares teenagers for the challenges they may face in their lifeguarding journey.
In addition to lifesaving initiatives, North Beach SLSC is proud to offer various amenities and resources to enhance the accessibility of the beach. The club has two beach wheelchairs available for public use, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the sand and surf. Furthermore, a beach access mat is rolled out during patrol hours in the summer, enabling individuals with mobility impairments to easily navigate the beachfront.
