Mysore Bristol is a renowned yoga studio located in Bristol, offering authentic Ashtanga Yoga classes to the people of the city. The studio is deeply rooted in the Ashtanga Yoga lineage, which can be traced back to Mysore, South India, where the practise continues to be taught today. At Mysore Bristol, students have the opportunity to learn Ashtanga Yoga as it has always been taught in India. They are fortunate to have two KPJAYI Authorised Teachers, Christine Gregory and Jon Hancock, who bring their wealth of knowledge and experience to the classes.
The journey of Mysore Bristol began in 2001 when Christine and Jon stumbled upon a yoga class in a basement car park in Mumbai, India. This transformative experience marked the beginning of their yoga journey and inspired them to bring the teachings of Ashtanga Yoga to Bristol. Since then, they have dedicated themselves to their practise, becoming highly skilled and respected instructors.
The studio offers a range of classes throughout the week. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings are dedicated to Mysore-style classes, where students can arrive between 7 am and 8:30 am, depending on their experience and inclination. These classes are suitable for all levels, including complete beginners who have never stood on a yoga mat. The focus is on individualised instruction, allowing students to progress at their own pace.
On Monday evenings, Mysore Bristol offers Ashtanga Led classes from 5:45 pm to 7:00 pm. These classes guide students through the foundations of the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series, including Surya Namaskars (Sun Salutations), the standing sequence, and some seated postures, followed by a period of rest. This class provides a structured approach to learning the Ashtanga sequence.
Additionally, there is a traditional counted-led class on Saturday mornings from 8 am to 9:30 am at Jon's home shala in Westbury-on-Trym. In this class, students are counted through the full Ashtanga Primary Series in Sanskrit. Beginners are welcome, although the instructor may make adjustments depending on individual abilities.
For those who are new to yoga or just beginning their practise, Mysore Bristol offers a special beginners' offer. For 60, students can enjoy one calendar month of unlimited morning Mysore-style and Monday evening led classes. This package is an excellent opportunity to immerse oneself in the practise and experience its transformative benefits.
