Cups and saucers were borrowed for afternoon tea.
Throughout the years, the Mt Pleasant Tennis Club has grown and developed into a vibrant and welcoming community. The club is proud to be affiliated with Tennis Canterbury Region, allowing members to participate in a variety of tennis activities and competitions.
Situated in a picturesque location, the club is nestled within the Kings Park overlooking the beautiful Ihutai Estuary in Christchurch. The club's unique setting adds to its charm and creates a serene and peaceful atmosphere for members and visitors alike.
With a focus on inclusivity and community, the Mt Pleasant Tennis Club caters to players of all ages and skill levels. From young juniors to seasoned seniors, there is a place for everyone at the club. Membership currently stands at 45 seniors and 40 juniors, and new members are always welcome to join the friendly and supportive community.
The club boasts four Rebound Ace Synpave courts, two of which are open to the public for a fee payable at the car-park gate or directly into the club's Westpac Account. The other two courts are exclusively reserved for full members, ensuring ample playing opportunities for all.
In terms of court usage, the club organises various club days. Tuesdays are dedicated to men's tennis starting from 3:30 pm, Thursdays feature tennis activities from 3:30 pm, and Saturdays offer senior club tennis sessions from 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm, with all courts available for use.
The club is also committed to promoting tennis among juniors. Hotshots, a programme designed to introduce children to the sport at all levels, is held on Saturdays from October to December. Love Tennis, another junior initiative, is planned for a date yet to be decided and will be advertised by CantyTennis. Coaching and Hotshots fees can be obtained under the 'MEMBERSHIP' heading and 'JUNIOR TENNIS' on the club's website.
Access to the courts can be obtained via different routes depending on preference. The lower access is possible from Main Road through Quarry Road, or from above through St Andrews Hill or Seamount Terrace via Rangatira Terrace.
The Mt Pleasant Tennis Club is proud to have an AED device available on-site, ensuring the safety and well-being of its members and visitors.
The club's executive and committee members work diligently to maintain the club's operations and ensure a positive experience for all. The current committee for 2023–2024 consists of President Richard Jones, Secretary Marilyn Cullens, Treasurer Debbie Atkinson, Club Captain Moritz Wagner, Website Administrator Elspeth Jeet, and committee members Polly Cunningham, Chris Morris, Mary Crowe, and Suzanne Stewart. The club's happy mascot is a dog named 'Smudge'.
Finally, the Mt Pleasant Tennis Club is grateful for the generous grant received from the CCC Strengthening Communities Fund, which has greatly contributed to the junior coaching programme.
