Mount Hay Road - Leura, located in the Blackheath area of Blue Mountains National Park, is a picturesque cycling park that offers stunning views and a variety of wildflowers in the Grose Wilderness. For those travelling from Leura Train Station, it is a 4. 5 km ride to the national park boundary, where you can then proceed along the unsealed road for approximately 11. 5 km until you reach the end at the Mount Hay summit walk carpark. Please note that drivers are advised to be cautious of cyclists on the road.
If you plan on hiking to Mount Hay summit, you will need to leave your bike at the carpark and bring a bike chain and lock, as well as suitable walking shoes.
The ride itself is relatively easy, with a few steep sections. As you make your way through the sandstone plateau, the light philtres through the canopy of scribbly gums, providing a serene atmosphere. Keep an eye out for the unique giant dragonfly that is exclusive to this area. Along the clifftops, you may also spot rare pink flannel flowers, which bloom after fire, creating a vibrant carpet of colour.
Once you reach the end of Mount Hay Road, you can take a brief walk along the Mount Hay summit walking track to enjoy the breathtaking gorge views across the Grose Valley to Mount Banks. This is the perfect spot to unpack a picnic lunch before continuing your adventure. Additionally, you can explore Lockleys Pylon walking track, which starts from Mount Hay Road and offers a chance to stretch your legs.
