About

Melville United AFC is a soccer club based in Hamilton, New Zealand. The club was formed in 1996 through the merger of Melville AFC, established in 1972, and Waikato United, formed in 1988. With the roots of both parent clubs, Melville United has a rich history connecting it to the major club football achievements in Hamilton over the past 60 years.

The club began as Melville District Schoolboys AFC in 1972 under the leadership of founders Bob Owens and Tony Tatler. Their aim was to bring together the strengths of schools in the Melville area. Initially, the club operated from Te Anau Park, but in 1981 they moved to their current headquarters at Gower Park. The clubrooms were initially located on private land at the south-western corner of the park before being relocated adjacent to the council amenities block.

Over the last 30 years, Melville United has invested significantly in facility improvements at Gower Park. These include the refurbishment of clubrooms, development of a car park, installation of floodlighting and a public address system, construction of a crowd barrier fence around the No 1 pitch, and the addition of seating and perimeter fencing. Additionally, the club has fully floodlit No 2, No 6, and No 7 pitches, as well as a floodlit training area at Kahikatea Park. Gower Park boasts seven full-sized pitches and several junior pitches of varying sizes.

On the playing front, Melville United has achieved notable success. The club gained promotion to the Northern League in 1982 and has steadily climbed the soccer ladder since then. They won the Northern League third division in 1991, the first division in 1993, and the Northern leading League in 1995.

Melville United AFC has a strong commitment to developing young talent and operates a Youth Academy. The academy provides coaching and development opportunities for aspiring young soccer players. The club's first-team coach for the men's side is Jarrod Young, while Tarena Ranui leads the women's team.

The club is proud of its community involvement and actively engages with the local community. Melville United AFC has established partnerships with funding, club, and academy partners, ensuring the continued growth and success of the club.
