Mellor Sports Club, located just south of Stockport on the eastern side of the borough, is a well-established sports club that is the proud home to four sports clubs: badminton, cricket, lacrosse, and tennis. All sections of the club actively participate in the North West leagues, with teams consisting of male and female, adult and junior players.
What sets Mellor Sports Club apart is its glorious setting amidst the beautiful local countryside, which is highly admired by both members and visitors. The club provides a special place where individuals can enjoy their favourite sports in a picturesque environment.
In addition to the sporting facilities, Mellor Sports Club also offers a newly refurbished bar and lounge area that is available for hire. This enables both members and non-members to come together and enjoy various social occasions, providing a fantastic opportunity for socialising and bonding over shared interests.
Mellor Sports Club has a rich history dating back to its founding year in 1953. The club originated from an informal arrangement between the village's badminton, cricket, and tennis clubs, which began in 1951. Later, in 1959, the lacrosse club joined, further strengthening the club's foundation and expanding its sporting offerings.
The club's early years were marked by the dedication and passion of a local gentleman named Warwick Frost. In 1951, Frost remortgaged his home to raise funds to purchase the club's grounds, which were initially only used for cricket. His unwavering commitment to village sport was truly inspirational. Frost often fundraised for the club, fearlessly boarding local buses with a collection box to gather funds.
As the years went by, Mellor Sports Club underwent numerous improvements and expansions. The lacrosse club, previously playing in various locations throughout Mellor, Marple Bridge, and Marple, finally found their permanent home in 1961. The badminton section initially played in a WW1 drill hall on Longhurst Lane, while the cricketers changed in an old wooden train wagon on the edge of the field. The all-weather tennis courts had a shale surface that required regular sweeping.
Today, Mellor Sports Club stands as one of the most successful and popular sports clubs in the area. It has undergone major rebuilds and various ground improvements over the years, enhancing the facilities and ensuring a high-quality experience for its members. At Mellor Sports Club, individuals of all ages and abilities can come together to engage in their favourite sports, make lasting connexions, and enjoy the beauty of their surroundings.
