The Melbourne Radio Control Circuit Racers, also known as MRCCR, is a prestigious car racing club located in Lilydale, Victoria. Founded in 1989, the club has a rich history and is regarded as one of the top RC racing clubs in Australia.
In its early days, MRCCR raced at various locations, including Geelong, before finally settling at Chirnside Park in the car park of a local shopping centre. The club's first race days involved driving in circles using the back of a tip truck as a makeshift driver's stand. Although the track was temporary due to its location within an active car park, members had the advantage of being able to practise at any time. Various track materials were tested, including gravel-filled fire hose, but the most lasting solution was the use of boards.
These boards, while disliked for their setup time and lack of forgiveness for off-line cars, served the club well until its move in August 1997.
Over the years, MRCCR has hosted numerous championship events, including the 1991 Australian National Championships and the 1997 National Championships. Additionally, the club has been a strong advocate for the 1/10th scale class, organising the very first Championship event for this class in 1993. This commitment to promoting the sport extended beyond the track, as the club actively participated in community events by organising demonstration races at local fairs and festivals. However, in 1995, the club shifted its focus to full-scale motorsport events, recognising the greater impact they could have in promoting the sport and the club.
Currently, MRCCR boasts a top-notch racing facility equipped with a permanent track and driver's stand. The track has undergone improvements, including line marking and painting of the “grass” area, to enhance the racing experience. The track is open to members during regular operating hours, which are from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm on most days. However, there are restrictions on engine use between 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Sundays, and the track is closed on specific holidays such as Good Friday, Easter Sunday, ANZAC Day, and Christmas Day.
The club has exemptions to these operating hours for major events such as the Victorian State titles and the Australian national titles.
As a member of the MRCCR, individuals have access to a vibrant community of RC racing enthusiasts who share a passion for the sport. The club welcomes beginners who have recently acquired a radio-controlled car and encourages them to experience the thrill of racing around the track. For more information on joining the club or attending one of its events, interested individuals can contact the club secretary.
Located on Hardy Street in Lilydale, Victoria, MRCCR is conveniently situated for easy access. Directions to the track can also be obtained from the club's website or through popular mapping applications.
