Welcome to Mei Jyu Kan – Wolverhampton Aikido Club! Located in Wolverhampton, this martial arts school and fitness centre offers Aikikai style Aikido lessons for adults and children. As a member of the British Birankai, the club follows traditional Aikido practises and recognises grades recognised by Aikikai Hombu Dojo.
Aikido is a Japanese martial art that focuses on circular movement and minimal effort for maximum effect. The goal is to redirect an attacker's force away from the defender and either throw or immobilise them. Aikido is not a religion or cult, but it does incorporate ethical and philosophical teachings. One of these teachings is the use of minimal force to achieve one's goals, preserving one's own life without causing unnecessary harm to the assailant.
Mei Jyu Kan – Wolverhampton Aikido Club offers Aikido classes three nights a week for adults at three locations: Albrighton, Wolverhampton, and Shifnal. They also hold separate children's Aikido classes twice a week at Albrighton and Wolverhampton. The club welcomes individuals of all fitness levels who are interested in learning self-defence and getting fit.
The club is also proud of its historical roots. Aikido was founded by Professor Morihei Ueshiba, also known as Osensei. Osensei was a master of various martial arts and incorporated ethical principles into his art. The Aikikai, the organisation founded by Osensei, is still run from the same dojo in Tokyo, Japan, now under the leadership of Osensei's grandson Moriteru Ueshiba.
In 1966, Chiba sensei, a student of Osensei, was sent to Britain to head up Aikido in the country. After spending ten years teaching and establishing a foundation here, Chiba sensei returned to Japan and later relocated to America, where he continues to live. Under Chiba sensei's directorship, several Aikido organisations formed, including the Aikikai of Great Britain, the British Aikido Federation, the United Kingdom Aikikai, and finally the British Birankai. Chiba sensei remains the technical director of the British Birankai and visits the UK to teach at its summer schools.
Mei Jyu Kan – Wolverhampton Aikido Club also provides a glossary of common Aikido terms to help students familiarise themselves with the language of the practise. From sensei (teacher) to waza (technique), students can deepen their understanding of Aikido as they progress through their training.
