Moving up the ranks, dancers will progress to Intermediate and Advanced levels. This is where the real dedication and commitment to Irish Dance comes into play. Dancers will start to learn more complex steps and choreography, and will have the opportunity to participate in local and regional competitions. These competitions provide a platform for dancers to showcase their skills and receive feedback from experienced judges, helping them to improve and grow as performers.
For those who show exceptional talent and commitment, the Academy offers the opportunity to compete at a national and international level. Dancers have the chance to compete in prestigious competitions such as the World Championships and the All Ireland Championships. The Academy is proud to have produced several World Champions, All Ireland Champions, and Oireachtas/Major winners over the years.
But it's not all about competition at McGL. The Academy recognises that not everyone aspires to be a champion dancer, and that's perfectly fine. Classes are tailored to meet the needs and goals of each individual dancer, whether they simply want to learn Irish Dance for recreational purposes or have dreams of performing on the West End stage. Everyone is treated equally and given the opportunity to develop and grow at their own pace.
The Academy takes pride in its dedicated and experienced teachers who have not only achieved success in their own careers as dancers, but also have a passion for teaching and guiding the next generation. They understand the highs and lows of the dance journey and are committed to providing the best instruction and support to their students. They live for the moments when their students excel and achieve their own personal goals.
At McGL, the sense of community is strong. The Academy fosters a supportive and inclusive environment where dancers are encouraged to support and uplift each other. The “Friends of McGahan Lees” initiative ensures that no dancer is hindered by financial constraints, and the Academy also actively participates in charity work, donating thousands of pounds each year to support the wider community.
Joining the McGL family means becoming part of a vibrant and passionate community. The Academy provides dancers with the opportunities to develop a love for Irish Dance and challenge their abilities to excel. While some may choose to dance purely for the love of it, others may find themselves travelling the globe and creating lifelong memories as they perform and compete internationally.
For those interested in joining McGL, the journey begins with a beginner's experience. Classes are held for beginners of all ages, starting from 4 years old. These classes focus on learning the basics of Irish Dance in a fun and non-competitive environment. The attire is casual, with dancers just needing comfortable sports attire and plimsolls or pumps.
Formal class costumes and shoes are not required at this stage.
Beginners are encouraged to participate in the Academy's annual class competitions, which are held in summer and at Christmas. These competitions provide a fun and supportive environment for dancers to showcase their progress and gain confidence. As dancers progress, they may choose to invest in Irish Dance pumps for soft shoe dancing, and heavy shoes will be required at a later stage.
All taster classes are free, and the registration fee only becomes payable when a dancer returns for their second month. This fee includes a branded t-shirt and other McGL attire. Parents are also invited to join in and support their young dancers during class competitions and other events.
No matter what level or age, all dancers at McGL are embraced as part of the family. The Academy is committed to nurturing a love for Irish Dance and providing opportunities for growth and achievement, whether it's on the world stage or within the dancer's own personal journey.
