Matsunoki Karate Academy Townsville Dojo is a renowned karate school located in West End, Townsville. With a rich history dating back to 1966, when Sensei Matsumoto arrived in Australia as a pearling technician and marine biologist, the school has been a pillar of the karate community in the region.
Originally formed as the Shoku-kai Karate club by request of the Island community in 1966, Sensei Matsumoto's dedication and passion for the martial art led him to open one of the first professional Karate Academies in Cairns in 1975. The Matsumoto Karate Academy, as it came to be known, started its training in Cairns on January 12th, 1976, and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2015.
In Townsville, the Matsunoki Karate Academy has been operating at its current location since 1991. The classes are led by experienced and dedicated Shodan Instructors Ursula Simmonds and Jillian MacKenzie since 2006, with the recent addition of Shodan Instructors Dean Kyle and Neal Davison. This team of instructors brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the dojo, ensuring students receive top-quality training and guidance.
As a member club of the Queensland Karate Association Inc. , Matsunoki Karate Academy upholds the highest standards in martial arts training. Sensei Matsumoto himself holds the title of DNBK (Dai Nippon Butoku Kai) International Branch Official Coordinator of Australia and is a Certified 8th Dan. Ursula and Jillian, the Sho Dan DNBK Members, also possess extensive certification in karate.
