

Martyn Harris Karate Academy is the oldest established Martial Arts Academy in North Cardiff, offering karate classes in Lisvane, Cyncoed, and Pontprennau. The academy teaches Kaizenkan Karate, which is a synthesis of Martyn Harris Renshi's 30 years of experience in karate and other martial arts. Martyn Harris, the founder and Chief Instructor, is a senior instructor with a 6th Dan rank. With over 30 years of Martial Arts experience and 25 years of teaching, Martyn holds black belts in Shotokan Karate and Okinawan Kempo.
Sensei Emma Harris, Martyn's wife, manages the Emma Harris School of Karate, which specialises in teaching young children and running after school clubs. She has a 2nd Dan in Kaizenkan Karate. Both Martyn and Emma are members of The Welsh Martial Arts Association (WMAA), with Martyn serving as the president. The WMAA aims to bring together like-minded martial artists, regardless of their art or style.
Martyn's responsibilities within the WMAA include technical guidance, grade ratification, instructor training, administration, chairing General and Annual General Meetings, and representing the Association at Governing Body events and seminars. Emma is responsible for networking, member recruitment, raising awareness about the benefits of martial arts, research and development, and instructor training for teaching young children.
The Welsh Karate Academy provides karate classes in Cardiff suitable for juniors aged 7 to 10. Their Junior Dragons Classes focus on discipline, respect, positive attitude, and confidence-building, using merit badges and competitions to convey these values.
For ages 11 and above, the academy offers senior classes for teenagers and adults. These classes provide an opportunity to train with friendly individuals who understand the importance of courtesy and respect while striving to improve physically.
In addition to these age-specific classes, Martyn Harris Karate Academy also offers family classes on Saturdays. These classes foster a tremendous atmosphere, promoting fitness, self-defence, and the opportunity to build lasting friendships while bonding with family members.

The academy's next event is the Brown & Black Belt Drills & Bunkai Seminar, taking place on January 27, 2024, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at Cyncoed Methodist. This seminar is open to those with grades 3rd kyu and above, with a fee of 20 per person.
