Doug, the organiser at Maranui Surf Life Saving Club, just wants to say a big welcome to everyone in the sports community. The club has been a key part of the Lyall Bay landscape since 1911, right here in Wellington.
Doug and the team patrol the local beaches with a committed group of volunteer lifeguards, all trained to keep everyone safe while they enjoy the water. They go through intensive training to meet high safety standards.
For the kids, Doug oversees the Junior Surf Programme, which was previously called Nippers. It's for children aged 6 to 13 and focuses on surf skills and water safety in a fun way. The goal is to help kids develop a love for the ocean and important surf skills.
Once kids turn 14 and qualify as lifeguards, they can join in on lifeguard sport, competing at regional and national levels. It's a great way for them to show off their skills and enjoy some friendly competition.
Doug is also proud to offer a versatile function room at the club. Whether it's a birthday, a corporate event, or a wedding, the room can be customised to fit any occasion, with stunning views of Lyall Bay to top it off.
The club runs as a volunteer charity organisation, so community support is essential. There is a donation link on the club’s website if anyone wants to help out.
And don't forget about the Maranui Café, located right underneath the club. It’s a popular spot for breakfast and brunch with a great view of the beach. Both locals and visitors love it.
With over 150 members across both junior and senior groups, Maranui SLSC is a welcoming and inclusive community. Doug encourages everyone to join in, share their passion for the ocean, and contribute to beach safety.
For updates and more info, subscribing to the club's newsletter is the way to go. Contact details are on the website, and Doug or someone from the team is always happy to answer any questions.
So come along to Maranui Surf Life Saving Club and be part of a community dedicated to beach safety, education, and having a great time. Haere mai!
