Blue Lightning Junior Orienteering presents Map Mates, an exciting adventure series specifically designed for children aged 7 to 13 who are new to orienteering. Happening twice a year, in May on Saturday mornings and in October on Wednesday evenings, this event coincides with the Saturday Metro Series and the Twilight Series. During Winter, it runs alongside the ACT Metro Series.
In Map Mates, teams of 2–4 children tackle an easy and safe orienteering course while parents are more than welcome to join in on the fun. It all kicks off with a free welcome event, offering a fantastic opportunity for the future Map Mates to meet and greet one another. At this event, they will also be introduced to the art of reading maps and can begin to appreciate the thrill of orienteering.
But that's not all! Before each event, an optional 20-minute activity session is offered. These sessions are packed with fun-filled activities that focus on teaching a different map reading skill every week. It's like a crash course in becoming an orienteering expert!
To ensure everyone stays on track, parents receive four weekly emails filled with coaching tips, helpful hints, and even some optional 'fun-fact' map activities to keep the children engaged and learning outside the events.
At the end of each event, participants are rewarded for their efforts with prizes. And we don't stop there! Extra points are up for grabs for those who come up with the best team name, rock the best team uniform, or craft the most impressive map of their backyard. It's all about having a blast, exploring new territories, and embracing the art of orienteering.
So, if you're a budding adventurer or have an adventurous child in your life, don't miss this opportunity to join Blue Lightning Junior Orienteering's Map Mates. Remember, the focus is on fun, adventure, and learning the ropes of orienteering. Get ready for four action-packed weeks of excitement!
