Lotus Yoga is a welcoming and inclusive yoga studio based in London, offering classes for individuals of all ages and abilities. The founder and principal teacher of Lotus Yoga, Catherine Mitchell, has been practising yoga since 1996 and began teaching in 2011. Catherine is a Senior Yoga Teacher registered through Yoga Alliance and holds qualifications in various specialities, including pre-and post-natal yoga, women's yoga therapy, Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs, and yoga and mindfulness for teens. Catherine's vast experience and comprehensive training enable her to offer a diverse range of classes that address different aspects of yoga and cater to various individual needs.
Lotus Yoga's mission is to help individuals feel better not only during the yoga class but also in their daily lives. The practise of yoga can bring numerous benefits, including improved body awareness, reduced stress levels, and better sleep. Catherine's journey in yoga began in 1996 when she attended her first yoga class. Intrigued by the holistic nature of yoga, Catherine went on to explore and practise different styles, including Iyengar, hatha, and Ashtanga vinyasa. Her thirst for knowledge led her to India, where she deepened her understanding of asanas, pranayama, meditation, and philosophy. Catherine completed her teacher training with Sivananda Yoga in 2011 and furthered her studies with experienced teachers such as Michel Besnard and Carlos Pomeda.
Additionally, she obtained advanced training in Yin Yoga with Norman Blair, which greatly influenced her teaching style.
In addition to teaching in various centres across London and Uganda as a VSO volunteer, Catherine is now based in Fort William, Scotland, where Lotus Yoga is located. She offers vinyasa flow classes, which incorporate dynamic movements synchronised with breath, Yin yoga classes for a more meditative and slow-paced practise, and pre-natal yoga classes that provide expectant mothers with relaxation and preparation for childbirth. Catherine's commitment to her own growth as a teacher is evident, as she continues to seek inspiration from other experienced teachers and expand her knowledge in the field.
