Llandudno Rugby Football Club, located in the resort town of Llandudno on the North Wales coast, is a well-established rugby union team. As a member of the Welsh Rugby Union, the club serves as a feeder club for the Scarlets. With a rich history dating back to 1952, Llandudno Rugby Club has become one of the most respected clubs in North Wales.
The club offers a range of teams, including senior, youth, and junior teams. The senior teams compete at a high level, showcasing the club's dedication to excellence. The youth and junior teams provide opportunities for children aged 6 and up to develop their rugby skills in a supportive and nurturing environment.
Originally formed by Mr. John Kidson, who arrived from Liverpool and noticed the absence of a local rugby club, Llandudno Rugby Club played its first season away from home due to the lack of a suitable ground. However, negotiations with the Conwy Corporation led to the acquisition of a football ground on Conwy Morfa in 1953, providing the club with a permanent home for the next few years.
In the following years, the club successfully developed local interest in the sport, with the introduction of rugby at the town's John Bright Grammar School leading to a steady stream of players. The annual Boxing Day game between the Old Boys and Llandudno 1st XV symbolises the enduring connexion between the school and the club.
A setback occurred in 1957 when a fire destroyed the dressing rooms at the Morfa ground. As a result, the club relocated to the Maesdu Road recreational ground provided by the Llandudno Urban District Council. In 1959, Llandudno Rugby Club was granted full membership of the Welsh Rugby Union, further solidifying its status in Welsh rugby.
To accommodate visiting teams, the club acquired the old Sailing Club headquarters on Mostyn Broadway. However, changing facilities remained challenging until the cooperation of the local Youth Club, John Bright's School, Llandudno Central School, and the club allowed for suitable accommodations for both the club and its visitors.
Under the leadership of Alan Jennings and Dr. Ian Wynne Hughes, the club experienced significant growth in playing strength, with dedicated committees working tirelessly to support its progression. Today, Llandudno Rugby Club continues to thrive, with a strong and talented pool of players representing the club across various levels of competition.
