Before making any equipment purchases, try out a few lessons first. If you're keen to continue, there's a range of gear available right at the club. Just a quick reminder, there are no lessons on bank holidays.
Dave, the organiser, is chuffed to bits about running the Liverpool Hung Gar Kung Fu Friendship Association. The focus is on top-notch traditional martial arts in the Hung Gar Kung Fu style. It's all about getting fit, staying disciplined, and growing personally through this old-school Chinese martial art.
Hung Gar Kung Fu is a style based on principles related to five animals – Tiger, Crane, Leopard, Snake, and Dragon – and five elements – Earth, Fire, Gold, Water, and Wood. Students pick up various techniques and forms, building strength, speed, and balance. The aim is to get a deeper understanding of the art and its principles.
Lessons are two hours long, aimed at boosting fitness, health, and vitality. There's a big focus on the Chinese Lion Dance as well – a lively and traditional part of Kung Fu training. As you progress, you'll get a chance to join in on this exciting and visually stunning performance.
Dave and his club are very active in local community events, especially during Chinese New Year. The club takes part in loads of festivities with lion dances, dragon dances, and martial arts displays, showcasing the skills and dedication of all the students and instructors.
Whether you're a newbie or have some martial arts background, you're welcome at the Liverpool Hung Gar Kung Fu Friendship Association. The club has classes for adults and kids aged 7 to 14. The instructors are experienced and committed to providing a supportive training environment.
To get started, turn up at the club around 6:30 pm for adult lessons or 5:45 pm for children's lessons. A club rep will be there to show you around and answer any questions. For training, wear comfortable black tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt, along with clean trainers. Dave suggests giving the lessons at least two weeks before you think about buying any gear, to see if this style of martial arts is right for you.
Dave’s aim with the Liverpool Hung Gar Kung Fu Friendship Association is to keep the art of Hung Gar Kung Fu alive and kicking. He’s all about fostering a welcoming, inclusive community where students can learn, grow and develop both physically and mentally.
