The Lemon Ballet School, located in Cardiff, has a rich history that dates back to its establishment in 1967 by Penelope Lemon. Miss Lemon, after her professional dancing career in London, decided to open the ballet school and taught there for many years until her retirement in 2006. Anwen Mannings, who trained with Miss Lemon until she was 17, went on to be accepted at the Royal Ballet School in London for the prestigious three-year teachers' training course. In 1993, after graduating successfully, Anwen returned to teach at the Lemon Ballet School and eventually took over as the principal in 2006.
Lowri Mannings, another former student of Miss Lemon, also completed the Royal Ballet School teacher's course and now teaches pointe work classes, adult classes, and Grade 8 to the older students of the school.
The Lemon Ballet School has seen numerous successes over the years with its students continuing their training in some of the best vocational ballet schools such as the Royal Ballet School, English National Ballet School, and Central Ballet School, among others. Several students from the Lemon Ballet School have even gone on to become professional dancers in esteemed ballet companies like the Dresden Ballet and Norwegian Ballet Company.
For those interested in joining the Lemon Ballet School, they have the opportunity to take the Royal Academy of Dance exams, though it is not compulsory. The decision to enter a student for an exam is made by the teacher based on their discretion. Many children find that working towards an exam goal provides them with numerous benefits to enhance their training. To be entered for an exam, students are required to attend an extra exam class each week for the nine weeks leading up to the exam date.
Letters regarding exam entry are given out before these extra classes begin.
Fees for the Lemon Ballet School are payable in advance for blocks of ten lessons, with letters reminding students distributed two weeks before the fees become due. All fees must be paid in full before the first class of the ten-week course begins.
Uniforms for the Lemon Ballet School can be purchased at A&A DANCEWEAR, located at 116 Park Cresc. In Barry. It is important for students to have their hair tied back for class, preferably in a bun if possible.
