Journey in Aikido is a personal one, and the time it takes to progress through the ranks can vary for each individual. At Kyu Shin Do Aikido (North Shore) Inc, we provide a supportive and encouraging training environment to help you reach your goals.
Our martial arts school has been teaching Aikido on Auckland's North Shore since 1992, and in 2022, we celebrated our 30th anniversary. We are proud to have been serving our community for three decades, and we continue to welcome new students of all ages and skill levels.
For those interested in trying Aikido, we offer two free classes as a way for you to come and meet us and experience the art form with no obligation. If you enjoy the classes, we will be happy to discuss membership options with you. As a 'not for profit' organisation, we strive to keep our fees affordable for all, ensuring that Aikido is accessible to everyone.
Visitors from other clubs and styles, both from New Zealand and around the world, are always welcome to join us at the dojo and train alongside our members. We believe in fostering a sense of community and camaraderie within the martial arts world.
Beginners are invited to join us at any time throughout the year, as Aikido is suitable for people aged 12 and above. We understand that starting something new can be daunting, but at Kyu Shin Do Aikido (North Shore) Inc, we know how it feels. Everyone you see in our classes has been a beginner at some point, and we will do our best to ensure that your first lesson, and all those after, are enjoyable and memorable.
When attending our classes, we recommend wearing loose and comfortable clothing, such as track pants and a T-shirt or sweatshirt. To ensure the safety of all participants, we ask that you remove all jewellery, tie back long hair, and keep your nails short.
Upon arrival, we encourage you to arrive 10 minutes before the advertised class start time. Introduce yourself to the Aikido Instructor, known as Sensei, or speak to any of the members for information. Take advantage of our two free classes, where you can try out Aikido and see if it is the right fit for you.
During your first training session, you can expect a light warm-up, followed by instruction on falling safely (Ukemi) and basic stances, footwork, and techniques. You may also receive a brief introduction to the weapons we train with, including the Jo (staff), Bokken (wooden sword), and Tanto (knife). There will be opportunities to discuss our style, structure, etiquette, and any other inquiries you may have.
Through Aikido training, you will develop various qualities over time. This includes becoming calmer and more confident in dealing with conflict, improving your fitness, flexibility, posture, balance, and coordination. Aikido also enhances your ability to react and recover when off balance, as well as increasing your awareness of your surroundings.
Please note that the time frame for progressing in Aikido is unique to each individual. Your journey in Aikido is a personal one, and we are here to support you every step of the way.
