And balanced while engaging in combat. At KenZenIchi Kase-Ha Academy, the focus is not only on physical technique but also on the development of character and the cultivation of a strong mind-body connexion.
The academy practises Kase-Ha Shotokan-Ryu Karate-Do, a Budo martial art that emphasises the flow of Ki energy. This unique style combines visualisation, centralisation, and abdominal breathing to improve overall physical and mental performance. Students also learn biomechanical stance analysis, rooting, and moving skills to enhance their coordination and strategic fighting approach.
The name “Ken-Zen-Ichi” reflects the academy's commitment to integrating the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of karate practise. It translates to “fist-meditate-one” in Japanese, signifying the unity of these three elements. The academy is grateful to Sensei Velibor Dimitrijevic 7th Dan, to whom Kase Sensei dedicated the name, for allowing them to use it.
KenZenIchi Kase-Ha Academy's logo features the Kase-Ha "Gi” symbol enclosed within the void of the Zen “Enso” symbol. This symbolism represents the balance and harmony achieved through karate practise.
Karate lessons at the academy are structured around three key elements: Kihon, Kata, and Kumite. Kihon, meaning “Basics” in Japanese, focuses on technique development, including breathing, stances, movements, blocking, punching, striking, and kicking. Breathing exercises and control of the hara, or core, are integrated into the training to enhance energy flow and create powerful and relaxed movements.
Kata, meaning “Form” in Japanese, involves practising set patterns of movements against an imaginary opponent. Unlike other clubs, KenZenIchi Kase-Ha Academy teaches katas in five different ways, including standard, reverse, backward, and stripped-down versions for clearer application of the movements.
Kumite, meaning “Grappling hands” in Japanese, is the partner work component of karate training. It begins with simple attacks and defences and progresses to more complex techniques, eventually leading to free sparring. Emphasis is placed on maintaining control of the body, breathing, and grounding to ensure strength, agility, and balance during combat.
At KenZenIchi Kase-Ha Academy, students not only learn the art of karate but also strive for self-improvement and personal growth. The academy provides a supportive and authentic Budo atmosphere where individuals of all ages and backgrounds can work towards achieving physical and psychological well-being.
