Professional, musician, and artist, but his passion for martial arts led him to open the Kensh Dj in Jan Juc.
The Kensh Dj focuses on teaching ancient samurai arts, specifically kobudo (traditional weapons) and jujutsu. Their lineage comes from the Takamatsuden Ryha, which includes various martial styles such as Gyokko, Kot, Togakure, Kukishin, Shinden Fud, Takagi Yoshin, and Jinen Ry. These arts were developed for real combat situations, emphasising quick and effective techniques to disable opponents.
At the Kensh Dj, they prioritise polishing kihon, which are the fundamental basics of the martial arts. They believe that without strong foundations, technique, and effectiveness will diminish under fatigue and adrenal stress. Therefore, they train passionately and safely, regularly pressure testing their techniques, strategies, mental state, fitness levels, and movement for efficiency and real-world self-defence.
Training at the Kensh Dj includes Junan Taiso, a warm-up conditioning routine, Meiso or meditation for breathing exercises, Ukemi or breakfalling and rolling techniques, Dakentaijutsu, Jutaijutsu, and Kihon which focus on strikes, kicks, and grappling fundamentals, techniques with both weapons and unarmed combat, and Randori, which is sparring if time permits and participants have appropriate experience.
The Kensh Dj also offers private training and weekend workshops regularly, providing additional opportunities for personalised instruction and intensive training sessions. Private training is available for $70 per hour and can be scheduled by calling the given contact number.
Their training location is at 16 Lehman Crt, Torquay, and it is recommended to contact ahead to inquire about the training schedule.
The Kensh Dj is led by the Dj-ch, Travis de Clifford, also known as Bugo or “Katsuyoshi” in martial name. With 25 years of martial arts experience and multiple trips to Japan, Travis achieved the rank of Sandan (3rd dan) in 2015. He is dedicated to offering life-changing personal growth and self-confidence to his students, along with teaching the values and treasures of Japanese Kobud.
Whether you are interested in self-defence, personal growth, or learning traditional Japanese martial arts, the Kensh Dj is committed to providing a unique training experience that combines historical authenticity with practical skills.
