The Yoga Centre, a renowned yoga club in Cairns, is excited to promote a local yoga event. Jan in Marichyasana 2 Iyengar Yoga at Mission Beach has been a beloved class since 2007. Held in the charming Progress Association hall, this venue boasts a breathtaking timber dance floor and windows that open to refreshing sea breezes. Surrounded by towering trees and located on the foreshore at North Mission Beach, it provides a serene and uplifting atmosphere for your yoga practice.
With an extensive background in Hatha yoga since 1992, Jan Watson is a highly experienced instructor who has exclusively taught in the Iyengar style since 1997. Iyengar yoga is renowned for its scientific approach, emphasising accurate practice and unwavering dedication. The practice is characterised by three key aspects: Technique, Sequencing, and Timing.
Techniques in Iyengar Yoga focus on teaching correct body placement and alignment. This ensures that practitioners experience the maximum benefits of each asana. Sequencing, on the other hand, determines the order of the asanas. It can be tailored to various factors such as the season, age, desired effect, or specific injury. Lastly, Timing refers to the length of time each asana should be held to optimise its benefits. Some asanas may be held for 30–60 seconds, while others for 5–10 minutes.
Jan in Marichyasana 2 Iyengar Yoga warmly welcomes yogis of all ages and experience levels. For younger students, the practice enhances flexibility and movement, while older students can maintain joint structure and energy. Ultimately, the aim of the practice is to quiet the mind and achieve stillness.
During the yoga classes, a variety of asanas are incorporated to serve different purposes. Standing poses lay a solid foundation, seated poses alleviate stiffness in knees, ankles, and hips, forward bending promotes calmness, twisting poses support internal organ health, back bending stimulates the central nervous system, inversions energise and stabilise circulation, prone positions induce relaxation, and each class concludes with the deeply soothing relaxation of Savasana. In addition to the asanas, Pranayama, or breath control, is also taught.
Jan, our dedicated teacher, follows the teachings of the esteemed BKS Iyengar and Dr. Geeta Iyengar. Their vast knowledge and expertise inform Jan's classes, ensuring a high-quality and authentic yoga experience for each participant.
