Iyengar Yoga House is a renowned Yoga studio located in Orpington, specifically in St. Mary Cray, dedicated to the tradition of Iyengar Yoga. Developed by Sri B. Iyengar (1918-2014), Iyengar Yoga focuses on body awareness and postural alignment to cultivate the mind.
The studio prides itself on offering yoga classes that support and complement everyday living activities for individuals of all ages, from 7 to 70 and beyond.
The studio is owned and operated by Lara and Roy, both fully qualified Iyengar Yoga teachers with a combined experience of over 30 years of continuous teaching. They are passionate about imparting the knowledge and benefits of Iyengar Yoga to their students.
Iyengar Yoga House offers a variety of classes to cater to different levels of experience and age groups. For beginners or those with little experience in Yoga, the Induction Course is the ideal introduction to the Iyengar Yoga method. This course is also suitable for regular students looking to supplement their practise. Beginners and mixed ability classes are available for those with some basic knowledge of Iyengar Yoga, providing opportunities for active, restorative, and pranayama practise.
Once students have attended these classes for about a year or gained equivalent experience, including knowledge of inversions, they are encouraged to join the Mixed Ability Classes.
Iyengar Yoga House recognises the importance of introducing children and teenagers to yoga. They offer a weekly class specifically designed for children aged 7 and above, where they can practise a full range of yoga poses in a dynamic and playful manner. The studio also welcomes suggestions for suitable day and time for these classes.
For individuals aged 60 and above or those looking for a gentle practise, Iyengar Yoga House offers classes that cover the main classical Iyengar yoga asanas, incorporating the use of props to overcome limitations. These classes aim to improve general flexibility and stamina, promoting a sense of wellbeing.
Restorative practise is gradually incorporated within weekly classes after about 6 months of regular attendance to Beginners classes. This practise assumes a basic understanding of the ethics behind asana practise within the Iyengar tradition and some knowledge of the use of props. Restorative classes are also a regular part of the Saturday monthly workshops and the Sunday 2-hour classes.
For those who cannot find a suitable class in the current timetable, Iyengar Yoga House offers the option of one-to-one or small group classes. Individuals can book private sessions for themselves or with family and friends.
Iyengar Yoga House is proud to follow the teachings and principles of B. Iyengar, the founder of Iyengar Yoga. Recognised worldwide as a true master in Yoga, B. Iyengar was included by Time Magazine in the top 100 most influential icons in 2004.
He was also awarded the Padma Vibhushan by the Indian government in 2014.
Whether you are new to Yoga or Iyengar Yoga or have been practising for years, Iyengar Yoga House welcomes individuals of all backgrounds and experiences to join their classes and experience the transformative power of Iyengar Yoga.
