The Iyengar Yoga Centre of Hamilton, established in January 2003 by Matthew Smart, is a dedicated school for teaching and practising Iyengar Yoga. Alongside Matthew, certified teachers Michelle and Annette have joined the team to maintain a regular weekly timetable. This yoga centre offers a variety of classes, including beginners courses, basic classes, remedial classes, and general level classes, making it accessible to individuals with varying levels of experience and ability.
The Iyengar Yoga method taught at this studio is suitable for individuals with injuries, medical concerns, and ageing issues. It is also beneficial for regular individuals seeking assistance in coping with the physical and mental stresses of work and daily life. The practise can complement any sport or exercise regime.
For those with concerns, a Therapy Assessment can be arranged before their first attendance. This assessment provides an opportunity for a personal consultation, advice, and direction from a teacher. Personal Tuition is also available at the studio. The fully equipped space provides a supportive environment for all who wish to learn and practise this method of yoga.
The Iyengar method is rooted in Asana (physical poses), Pranyama (breath work), and is renowned for its emphasis on alignment, use of props, longer holds in poses, specialist medical methods, and inversions. It encourages regularity in practise, as fundamental results require consistency.
When attending a class at the Iyengar Yoga Centre of Hamilton, participants are advised to wear comfortable loose clothing and go barefoot. Changing rooms are available, and it is recommended to avoid eating for at least two hours before class. Arriving early is encouraged to allow for a 10-minute window. Participants are also requested to inform their teacher of any injuries or medical conditions before the class.
All necessary equipment is provided, and payment options include Eftpos, excluding credit cards.
BKS Iyengar, the founder of Iyengar Yoga, lived in India and passed away in 2014. His granddaughter Abhijata and his uncle Prashant now head the Institute in Pune, India, fulfilling Mr. Iyengar's wish for Iyengar yoga to be a living method that continues to evolve.
The Iyengar Yoga Centre of Hamilton is committed to teaching and promoting the Iyengar Yoga method. With highly experienced and certified teachers, including Matthew Smart with 38 years of experience, Michelle Brown with 25 years of experience, and Annette Springer with 19 years of experience, the centre offers a comprehensive and authentic study of Iyengar Yoga.
All teachers at the studio are certified by the association Iyengar Yoga New Zealand (IYNZ), and they maintain their ongoing dedication and application through continuous study.
With a regular timetable that caters to all levels of ability and background, the Iyengar Yoga Centre of Hamilton welcomes individuals who are eager to embark on a long-term study of this highly beneficial practise.
