West Coast Mountain Guides, Fort William's premier Climbing club, is excited to announce the Introductory Winter Climbing Course! This thrilling 5-day course is specifically designed for individuals who have limited winter climbing experience but have big dreams of scaling graded winter routes. Even if you're already an experienced winter climber, this course can still help you enhance your lead climbing skills.
Winter climbing in Scotland poses unique challenges, from navigating appropriate climbs and route finding to mastering ropework and arranging suitable protection. And let's not forget about the ever-changing variable conditions and exposure! Our course aims to address all these essential aspects in a progressive manner that meets the needs and aspirations of each participant.
During the course, you'll focus on developing core winter skills while receiving expert guidance and instruction. We'll cover everything from moving on steep ground and using two climbing axes to placing protection, mastering ropework, and building belays. The routes we tackle will be tailor-made to suit your specific requirements and aspirations, with a general focus on the grade II to III range. If conditions permit, you may even have the exciting opportunity to lead your first winter pitch!
Whether you're an individual or a couple, this course is open to all. We don't have a minimum number requirement, so you can sign up confidently. The course fee covers the cost of guiding and instruction, along with the use of a harness and helmet. However, please bear in mind that you'll need to consider additional expenses such as accommodation, food, uplift, personal equipment (including the option to hire crampons, ice axes, and boots), and insurance. If the scheduled course dates don't align with your availability, don't worry! Private mountain guiding is also available at an extra cost.
The course will be running throughout winter of 2023-2024, so you have plenty of time to plan ahead. The cost for our fantastic 5-day course is £950. For those interested in private courses, the pricing varies from £300 to £450, depending on the level of guiding or instruction required.
To ensure your comfort during the course, we recommend bringing a 35-45 liter rucksack. This will allow you to easily carry your winter climbing kit and keep your essentials within reach.
