Hornsby Karate, also known as World Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Academy, is a local Karate club situated in the vibrant city of Sydney. Led by the highly skilled and experienced instructor, Phillip Chin Quan, this academy offers top-notch training in the World Goju-Ryu style of Karate. With his impressive 6th Dan rank, Phillip is a force to be reckoned with in the world of martial arts.
Phillip's journey in the world of Karate began way back in 1966 under the guidance of Master Jack Rozinsky at the renowned Shuto Karate school in St. Kilda. This school became the foundation of his martial arts training, where he not only learned Karate but also dabbled in Ju Jitsu and Tae Kwon Do. His dedication and hard work paid off as he achieved high ranks in Tae Kwon Do organisations in Victoria. Quite an impressive feat, wouldn't you agree?
In 1968, during Jack Rozinsky's honeymoon, Phil was asked to step up and teach the Shuto Karate class. At a young age, he showcased his talent as an instructor, leaving everyone in awe. It was in April 1969 that Phil joined the Goju-Kai Karate school, led by the esteemed Tino Ceberano, a 3rd Dan black belt and ex-U.S. Marine. This Karate school gained immense popularity and attracted many senior students from Jack's school.
Phil's relentless training and commitment helped him ascend the ranks swiftly. By September 1969, he had already reached 4th Kyu. Along his journey, he had the privilege of training with renowned masters such as Kaicho Max, Hanshi Warren Ross, Bob Jones, Richard Norton, Lou Spizziri, Ray Maxwell, Matt Savino, and Gary. His enthusiasm for Karate was truly remarkable, as he even continued training during his military service in the Australian Army.
In February 1970, Phil's dedication and skills were acknowledged during a surprise senior grading. Shihan Tino and the grading panel bestowed upon Phil his well-deserved 3rd Kyu rank, presenting him with his new Obi as a symbol of his achievement. This was a significant honour for Phil as he joined the ranks of the Dojo Sempai. After completing his service in Vietnam, he resumed his training under the guidance of Shihans Tino Ceberano and Sal Ebanez, both of whom had also served in the military. Their invaluable advice to resume training was not only to aid in his re-adjustment to civilian life but also to prevent any potential PTSD symptoms from worsening.
