The Heidelberg Hawks Basketball Club, located in Macleod, is a vibrant and inclusive community club that aims to promote and develop the game of basketball in the local area. The club is a member of the Eastern Districts Junior Basketball Association (EDJBA) and offers programmes and teams for players of all ages and skill levels.
The club's history dates back to the mid-1970s when a group of local teenagers, including Kerrie Harper and her brothers, started playing basketball at what is now known as the Macleod YMCA. What started as informal games on Thursday nights quickly grew into the Macleod Basketball Competition, with Iris Harper making bibs to distinguish the teams. By 1976-77, the club had four teams competing in the EDJBA.
Today, the Heidelberg Hawks Basketball Club continues to thrive and provide a welcoming environment for players and their families. The club offers a range of programmes and initiatives, including the Mini Hawks programme for children aged between 5 and 10, aimed at teaching the fundamentals of basketball in a fun and supportive setting.
In addition to grassroots development, the club also hosts various events throughout the year. These include coaching clinics led by experienced coaches, such as the recent shooting master clinic conducted by Coach Nathan Cooper-Brown. The club also organises annual presentations and family days to celebrate the achievements of its players and provide opportunities for members to come together and enjoy a range of activities, including obstacle courses, inflatable castles, face painters, and more.
The Heidelberg Hawks Basketball Club is committed to providing opportunities for players to further develop their skills and love for the game. The club runs the Hawks Hoops Camp during school holidays, where participants can hone their basketball skills under the guidance of experienced coaches.
For those interested in joining the club, the Heidelberg Hawks invite all kids under 10 to come and try basketball and experience the fun and excitement firsthand. The club also actively promotes girls' participation in basketball, partnering with the Ivanhoe Knights Basketball Club to host all-girls home games at the Latrobe Sports Stadium.
To stay up to date with the latest news and events, the Heidelberg Hawks Basketball Club encourages members and supporters to connect with the club on social media. The club's social media presence is proudly sponsored by DigiCloud.
