Eric Geddes took over as Harwich and Dovercourt Sailing Club's organiser after the previous one stepped down due to ill health. The club had to halt its activities during WWII due to military use of Bathside Bay but resumed operations after the war. In 1960, it moved to its current location on the River Stour, and the LBK6 clubhouse officially opened in 1961.
Today, Harwich and Dovercourt Sailing Club, run by a team led by Geddes, thrives with dedicated volunteers handling daily operations and events. The well-maintained boat yard and ample moorings are available to all members. The club welcomes both seasoned sailors and beginners, fostering a community where experienced members share their knowledge and stories. Friday bar evenings offer a relaxed setting for new members to connect and get advice.
The club also organises various social events, including BBQs and fleet cruises, giving members a chance to bond and build lasting friendships. Those interested in joining can apply for full or associate membership by submitting an application to the committee. Full members are expected to contribute to the club’s activities, while associate members participate more on a social level.
With a rich history dating back to the early 20th century, Harwich and Dovercourt Sailing Club remains a cornerstone of the local sailing community, continuing the tradition of sailing on the River Stour.
