Crown green bowls originated in the North and Midlands of England, North Wales, and the Isle of Man, with the earliest reference dating back to the 1870s. The game's first governing body, the Lancashire, and Cheshire Association, was established in 1888 and was eventually replaced by the British Crown Green Bowling Association (BCGBA).

The BCGBA brought together all county associations and dropped the “Amateur” designation in 1972. While the game was originally limited to amateurs without prize money, professional players formed their own association called the “Panel. ” They played daily matches in Lancashire, with bets being placed on the games. Today, crown green bowling is played to 21 points and has gained popularity since the 1970s, with an increase in the number of county associations from ten to sixteen.

The history of Griff & Coton Bowls Club is closely tied to the Griff and Coton Sports and Miners Welfare Club. The club grounds were opened in 1909 and initially provided land for miners to enjoy in their free time. Bowls started at the club in 1912, and the main club building was opened in 1927, funded by donations from Griff No 4 and Griff Clara miners.
