Great Harwood Golf Club, located in Blackburn, is a historic and prestigious golf club that has been serving the local community for over a century. Established in January 1896, the club was formed by about 50 gentlemen of Great Harwood who met at the Wellington Hotel. The early years of the club were spent on land at Belmount, where thirteen holes were constructed. However, in 1927, the club had to find a new location as the lease of the land at Belmount was not renewed.
Determined to continue providing a golfing experience for its members, a general meeting was held to wind up the club. However, a glimmer of hope emerged when land at Harwood Bar became available. Excited about the prospect of a new home, the club successfully purchased the land, and a Limited Company was formed to oversee the project. With the issuance of 100 shares at 5 each and 2,000 worth of debenture shares, the construction of a nine-hole course began.
In October 1927, Great Harwood Golf Club made a momentous move to its current location. Designed and laid out by Mr F. Palmer of Entwistle, the course was ready for play by July 1928. The official opening of the new club took place on the 21st of that month, and the first ball was driven by F.
Williamson of Rossendale, the President of the East Lancashire Golf Association, of which Great Harwood Golf Club was a founder member.
Over the years, the club has had several notable professionals, including Maurice Ormerod, who joined in 1933. Ormerod, previously the professional at Peel GC on the Isle of Man, was the first of a series of talented professionals to provide expert instruction and guidance to club members. Harry Watson, Stephen Berry, Wayne Lennon, Alan Rodwell, and Chris Stammers have all followed in Ormerod's footsteps.
