The Greater London Chess Club (GLCC) is a vibrant and welcoming chess club located in central London. Originally established as the works club for the Greater London Council, GLCC now welcomes players from all backgrounds and employs a diverse membership, with more than half of its current members coming from outside the former GLC ranks. GLCC prides itself on being the chess club for individuals who have worked for the Greater London Council, London Residual Body, Inner London Education Authority, or the current Greater London Authority.
The club operates throughout the year, with meetings taking place every Tuesday evening from 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm, from September to June. The club's venue is the Upper Vestry House, located at St George's Bloomsbury, 6 Little Russell Street, London WC1A 2HR. Membership to GLCC offers access to various league teams and an array of internal tournaments and special events suitable for players of all skill levels.
GLCC places a strong emphasis on community and camaraderie. It currently organises seven league teams and hosts a variety of tournaments and events, allowing members to engage with fellow chess enthusiasts and enhance their playing abilities. The club has been featured in Metro Newspaper, served as a setting in a bestselling thriller, and even provided advice to a theatre company regarding the portrayal of chess in a major London production.
To ensure the safety and well-being of its members, GLCC has implemented Covid-19 measures at its venue. Individuals exhibiting symptoms of Covid-19 or those who have recently tested positive are advised not to attend club meetings. The Upper Vestry House offers ample ventilation, with high ceilings and windows that can be opened to provide cross-ventilation, weather permitting.
GLCC warmly encourages new members of all playing strengths to join their league teams and engage in club activities. Interested individuals are welcome to visit the club on a Tuesday evening, with the first two club nights being free and without any obligation to become a member. To participate in internal club tournaments or play for one of the league teams, prospective members must complete a membership application form and pay the applicable subscription fee. Additionally, English Chess Federation Bronze Membership is mandatory for participation in graded competitions, such as league matches and select tournaments.
Membership subscription fees for GLCC vary depending on membership type. For new members joining from September 2023 to August 2024, the full annual subscription fee is 50, while juniors under 18 years of age and full-time students pay 30. Existing members are required to renew their subscriptions at 75 (40 for juniors and full-time students). The club offers complimentary membership to individuals who hold the titles of GM, IM, FM, WGM, WIM, and WFM.
Subscriptions can be paid via various methods, including online through Paypal, electronic bank transfer, cheque (payable to 'Greater London Chess Club'), or in cash to any of the club officers or team captains. Individuals seeking further information about GLCC are encouraged to reach out to Tyrone Jefferies, the club's secretary.
GLCC's Facebook page serves as an additional platform for updates and information. Although some club tournaments are exclusive to members, non-members may also participate in selected tournaments by paying a non-member entry fee.
The calendar page on GLCC's website provides a comprehensive overview of events scheduled for the 2023-24 season, allowing members and prospective players to plan their involvement accordingly. GLCC looks forward to welcoming new members and fostering a thriving chess community in London.
