Alice Hughes, the organiser, extends a warm invitation to the entire sports community. Girton College Boat Club (GCBC), rooted in history since 1906, opens its doors to all members of Girton College, Cambridge. Alice highlights that anyone with a can-do attitude is welcome, irrespective of fitness or skill level. The focus is on inclusivity and community spirit.
With over 50 members ranging from PhD students to freshers, GCBC boasts a diverse membership. Alice is proud to be part of a club with such a solid reputation within Cambridge, with a history spanning more than 115 years.
The club trains primarily for the famous "Bumps” races in the Lent and Easter terms, but also engages in other races throughout the year, depending on crew capabilities. Alice ensures the club's social activities are just as vibrant, featuring social curry nights, “boatie” events, spontaneous post-training socials, and swaps with other boat clubs. Additionally, three boat club dinners each year provide occasions for members to unite and celebrate rowing.
Alice emphasises the camaraderie that rowing fosters. From early-morning outings to the synchronised movements of a crew, the sport brings people together in a unique way. GCBC's varied social calendar includes termly Boat Club Curries and formal Boat Club Dinners. Members also enjoy post-race socials, participate in swaps with other colleges, and join various rowing-themed events.
Alice assures that GCBC offers a fulfilling rowing experience combined with a lively social life, welcoming everyone, regardless of background or ability. Those keen on joining or learning more about GCBC can visit the Freshers page on the club's social media platforms. Alice looks forward to meeting new members who share a passion for rowing and community.
