Gaia Yoga is a tranquil yoga studio located in Thornleigh, in the Upper North Shore of Sydney. The studio offers a variety of yoga classes for individuals of all levels, from beginners to experienced practitioners. The classes at Gaia Yoga are designed to provide a holistic experience that enhances the mind, body, and soul connexion.
The studio also provides yoga class videos for home practise, which can be found on their Video page. This allows individuals to continue their yoga journey even outside the studio. However, please note that there will be no classes on December 14th, 2024, and between December 22nd and January 21st, 2024.
To ensure a personalised experience and maintain a peaceful atmosphere, Gaia Yoga limits the number of students per class to seven. Therefore, it is recommended to call, text, or email in advance to book your spot. If you are feeling unwell, it is advised not to attend the class for the well-being of yourself and others.
For those who are new to yoga and unsure where to start, Gaia Yoga offers home studio classes on Tuesday morning/evening and Thursday evening. These classes are pay-as-you-attend and cost $20 per session. It is a great opportunity to explore yoga and see if it resonates with you.
The general classes at Gaia Yoga are suitable for everyone and run for 75 minutes. Each class begins with a centering exercise and breath awareness, followed by warm-up stretches, posture work (asanas), a breathing practise (Pranayama), and concludes with relaxation and meditation. The content of the classes varies each week to target different parts of the body and introduce new concepts, keeping the focus fresh. Postures range from basic to intermediate/advanced, depending on the student's ability.
Props such as straps, blocks, and blankets are sometimes used, and all necessary equipment is provided in the studio.
Gaia Yoga also caters to specific needs. For expectant mothers, the studio offers pre-natal yoga. Although there is currently no dedicated pre-natal class, pregnant students are welcome to attend general hatha classes and will receive appropriate guidance and support throughout the practise. The yoga postures are modified to suit the changing body and incorporate positions beneficial for labour.
Pre-natal yoga at Gaia Yoga focuses on nurturing both the mother and the baby in a holistic manner.
In addition, Gaia Yoga recognises the unique challenges faced by teenagers and offers yoga classes specifically tailored to their needs. The instructor has been teaching yoga to high school students since 2006 and has received specialised training in Yoga for Teenagers. These classes not only focus on physical postures but also touch upon the mental and emotional aspects of a teenager's life. Students are provided with tools for stress relief and have the opportunity to relax and unwind.
Gaia Yoga is run by an experienced and dedicated yoga instructor who has extensive qualifications and experience in the field. The instructor has completed the 120+ hour Pre and Post Natal Diploma with the International Yoga Teacher Association (IYTA) and has also completed additional courses to specialise in Yoga for Teenagers. Furthermore, the instructor has served on the IYTA Committee of Management, including being the President from 2017 to 2021. With a passion for yoga, the instructor has been actively involved in the yoga community, organising workshops and retreats and bringing esteemed yoga lecturers from India and interstate to Sydney.
