Over a century, Fitz Park Bowling Club has been a staple in the Keswick community, providing a space for sport, recreation, and social activities. Situated in Upper Fitz Park, Keswick, the club offers a picturesque location amidst the stunning scenery of the English Lake District.
The club's origins date back to 1882 when the park was opened. While there is no official documentation, it is believed that two bowling greens were laid in that period. Over time, the park housed two separate bowling clubs, Greta Side and Fitz Park No. 1.
However, due to declining membership, the two clubs merged in 1972 to form Fitz Park Bowling Club.
One of the standout features of the club is its exceptional green, which is considered one of the finest in the county. The members take great pride in maintaining the green to a high standard, and it regularly hosts county competitions and matches. Despite facing challenges such as significant flooding in 2005, 2007, and 2015, the club's dedicated members have always managed to restore and repair the clubhouse.
Fitz Park Bowling Club actively participates in four leagues: the West Cumbria Men's Fours League, the Eden Valley Mixed Fours League, the Eden Valley Ladies Triples League, and the Eden Valley Mixed Triples League. In addition to these league competitions, the club also organises numerous internal competitions, friendly matches with other clubs in Cumbria, and matches against touring teams. The club ensures that the needs of non-competitive bowlers are well catered to as well.
To promote inclusivity and encourage newcomers, the club welcomes visitors to come and play while they are in the area or locals who are interested in trying out the sport. Visitors are required to pay green fees, and the club arranges a taster session with a member for potential new members. The seating around the green offers a pleasant spot to relax and enjoy bowls during the summer.
Fitz Park Bowling Club is a thriving hub of sporting and social activities, bringing the community together. With its rich history, beautiful location, and passionate members, it continues to be a beloved institution in Keswick, Cumbria.
