Ferrie Oval

Ferrie Oval, located in Kooyong, is a popular cricket ground managed by the City of Stonnington. Following the completion of the Toorak Road level crossing removal, the oval is undergoing a reinstatement and improvement project that aims to benefit both casual and sporting users.

The works being carried out at Ferrie Oval include the reinstatement of the turf oval and cricket pitch, which will be accompanied by upgraded drainage and irrigation systems to ensure optimal playing conditions. Additionally, new seating will be installed for both spectators and casual users, providing a comfortable viewing experience.

The surrounding area of the oval will also undergo enhancements, with tree planting and landscaping works planned to beautify the surroundings. Improved shared pathways for pedestrians and cyclists will be constructed to increase accessibility and encourage active transportation to the ground. New fencing will also be erected to create a buffer between sporting and casual users, ensuring a safe and organised environment for everyone.

One exciting feature being explored is the installation of floodlighting. This addition will improve access to the oval for junior sports and casual users, enabling extended hours of play and training. The floodlighting system will be designed to minimise light spillage and directed away from nearby houses, ensuring minimal disruption to the local community.

In terms of the timeline, the project has progressed steadily since its initiation. Groundworks and amendments were completed in January 2021, followed by the installation of new drainage and irrigation systems, as well as the laying of new turf in late February. Further works, such as consolidating the turf, constructing shared user paths, and installing park furniture, were completed by May 2021, enabling the reopening of Ferrie Oval for casual and sporting use.

Looking ahead, additional lighting works are scheduled to take place between March and May 2022, focusing on the oval and car park areas. This will further enhance the facilities and provide a well-lit environment for evening activities.
