Eyott Sailing Club, located near the top of the River Crouch in the riverside town of South Woodham Ferrers, is a dinghy sailing club and yacht club that offers a safe and challenging environment for all levels of sailing ability. The club, which has been operating for over seventy years, remains true to its founding members' spirit of competitiveness on the water, camaraderie on land, and a warm welcome to visitors.
Eyott Sailing Club is situated on the northern bank of Fenn Creek, a tidal tributary of the River Crouch. The twists and turns of the creek, coupled with the tidal flow, provide a unique and varied sailing experience. The flat water and proximity to the shore make it an ideal location for learning to sail, ensuring the safety of inexperienced members. In addition to dinghy sailing, the club also offers membership for canoes, kayaks, and paddleboarders.
The racing season at Eyott Sailing Club runs from March to October and forms the main focus of the club's on-water activities. The racing is designed to be accessible to all participants, with even novice sailors able to complete their first races alongside highly skilled helms in faster boats. Eyott is considered a safe venue for learning and improving sailing skills, with the water almost always flat and the shore never too far away. Racing is not only an opportunity to compete but also provides a chance for beginner sailors to learn from more experienced individuals.
What sets Eyott Sailing Club apart is its unique racing venue. Races typically start at the clubhouse in the narrow Fenn Creek, where winds can be shifty and tacking is frequently required. The racecourse then extends to the broader River Crouch, where wind conditions become stronger but steadier. The varying weather conditions and strong tidal flow in the main river provide an exciting and challenging race experience.
Each race lasts approximately 80 minutes, and staggered starts ensure that all boats finish around the same time. The maximum length of boats allowed on the creek is limited to 13ft.
Eyott Week, the club's annual racing week, is a highlight for members and visitors alike. Held from Monday to Friday, Eyott Week welcomes visiting sailors with dinghies of 13ft or less. Visitors are encouraged to leave their boats at the club, and the week includes social events each evening, culminating in a barbecue and prize-giving on the Friday evening. Eyott Week attracts participants from Up River Yacht Club, adding a competitive edge to the fleet.
With race fees set at just 2 per race, Eyott Week offers exceptional value for an open sailing week.
Eyott Sailing Club is dedicated to providing an enjoyable and inclusive sailing experience for all. Whether you are a beginner looking to learn or an experienced sailor seeking a unique racing challenge, Eyott Sailing Club offers the perfect environment to pursue your passion for sailing.
